The published duration rule

As reviewed on 4 October 2026, GOV.UK states that a Graduate visa lasts two years for qualifying applications made on or before 31 December 2026 and eighteen months for qualifying applications made from 1 January 2027. Doctoral qualifications continue to have a three-year period under the published rules. This article is a forward-looking planning guide about an announced rule, not a claim that the January 2027 change has already taken effect.

The Immigration Rules and the explanatory memorandum to the October 2025 changes support that application-date distinction. Applicants should check the current rules when preparing to apply, because later amendments can occur. A desired permission length does not allow a person to apply before becoming eligible. The course-completion and current-permission requirements remain central, so the first task is to establish the actual academic and immigration timetable rather than simply aiming for a date on the calendar.

Ask the education provider about completion reporting

The government guidance says an applicant can apply after the education provider has told the Home Office that the eligible course has been successfully completed. Clarify with the provider how that notification is handled and how the student will know it has occurred. A dissertation submission, examination result, or graduation ceremony may happen at different times. Do not assume that the earliest of those events automatically establishes readiness for a Graduate application.

Keep the communication from the university or college and compare the course details with the Student permission. If results are delayed, a resit is required, or the course changes, ask the provider's immigration team for guidance on the consequences. Do not pressure the institution to report a completion that has not occurred. The application must be based on the actual qualifying achievement and the required notification, regardless of which duration rule would be more convenient.

Put the Student expiry date in the same calendar

The Graduate overview states that the application must be made before the Student or relevant Tier 4 permission expires. Record that date alongside the expected completion report and other requirements. A graduation celebration scheduled later does not automatically extend immigration permission. If the timing appears difficult, seek qualified advice promptly and ask the institution about the position. Waiting until the last day can leave little opportunity to resolve a missing report or document problem.

Review the full eligibility conditions, including the requirement to apply from within the UK and the relevant study circumstances. A course title alone may not establish every condition. Keep the CAS and current permission details available where required by the application. If your immigration history includes changes of sponsor, remote study, or other unusual periods, obtain an assessment based on that record rather than assuming the general overview covers every exception.

Prepare for the route’s actual purpose

The Graduate route offers a period after eligible study in which holders can undertake activities permitted by its conditions. Read the current guidance on work and other restrictions before accepting a role or beginning a business activity. An employer may ask about the duration and proof of permission, so communicate the status actually granted rather than a hoped-for future decision. The visa begins from approval under the published overview, not from a personally selected employment start date.

Create a practical plan for the period available. Job search, professional development, and preparation for another route take time. A shorter prospective period can affect when to begin discussing sponsorship with employers, but it does not make sponsorship inevitable or remove another route's requirements. The useful response is earlier information gathering and realistic scheduling, not a promise that any graduate can move automatically into a permanent career in the UK.

Examine family and future applications separately

The government guidance says eligible partners and children may apply, but the family rules should be checked individually. Do not assume that a relative who has never held the relevant dependant permission can always join through the Graduate route. Review the current requirements for each family member and their existing status before making plans. Their deadlines and evidence may differ from the principal applicant's academic timetable.

A Graduate visa cannot be extended under the current overview. Someone intending to remain longer must assess another available route and meet its conditions. A future Skilled Worker application, for example, involves its own employer, job, and eligibility assessment. Keep the possibility of switching separate from an assurance that it will be available. A sensible plan also considers departure or another lawful option if the desired next route is not secured in time.

Use the date distinction carefully

The relevant published distinction concerns when the qualifying Graduate application is made. It should not be simplified into a claim that everyone enrolled before a particular year receives two years, or that every student graduating in 2027 has identical circumstances. Doctoral qualifications have a separate duration, and the other eligibility rules still apply. Verify the current official position rather than relying on an older university slide or a social-media summary.

The practical sequence is to confirm eligible completion, verify that the provider has reported it, review the current permission and other conditions, and prepare an accurate application within the lawful timetable. Keep a complete submission record and read the resulting decision. Planning around the scheduled change is useful only when grounded in those facts. It should help students make informed decisions about their next stage without encouraging premature applications or assumptions about guaranteed future status.
